On April 27, 2026, the Lapu-Lapu City government began the temporary relocation of 66 families living near the Mactan Expo in Cordova, Cebu, as part of security preparations for the ASEAN Leaders Summit scheduled for May 7-8, 2026. The families were moved to a resort in Cordova, where they will stay until May 9, after the summit concludes.
Security Perimeter and Government Directive
The area occupied by these families falls within the security perimeter of the Mactan Expo, one of the main venues for the summit. Mayor Cindi King-Chan clarified that the decision to relocate was not made by the local government unit (LGU) but was a directive from the National Organizing Council (NOC).
“It was not the LGU’s call; it was the NOC’s decision. We are just following directives,” Chan stated.
Community Agreement and Support
Earlier, the Lampara Urban Poor Association expressed agreement with the temporary transfer, as the government is covering all expenses, including accommodation, food, and other needs. The resort accommodations range from P1,600 to P5,500 per night.
In addition to lodging, each family received an initial assistance of P2,000. The government is also offering seminars and livelihood training during the relocation period.
Residents are scheduled to return to their homes on May 9, coinciding with the conclusion of the ASEAN Summit.
