40th People Power Anniversary: Unity and Anti-Corruption Rallies

Nation Marks 40th Anniversary of People Power Revolution with Unity Rallies

Today, numerous groups are expected to conduct rallies and demonstrations in conjunction with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the People Power Revolution. This includes events organized by progressive groups under the EDSA40 Alliance, which will take place near the EDSA Shrine at Ortigas Avenue. Simultaneously, movements such as the Trillion Peso March Movement, TINDIG Pilipinas, and Akbayan are planning separate programs at the EDSA People Power Monument.

Successful Kick-off Concert Sets the Tone

Recently, a preliminary activity called the People Power 40 Kick-off Concert was successfully held at the Quezon Memorial Circle. Organized by Senator Bam Aquino, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Kaya Natin!, and Mayors for Good Governance, the event attracted over 20,000 attendees, predominantly youth. This concert aimed to reignite the spirit of the original 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, serving as a platform to advocate for accountability among corrupt officials.

Collaborative Efforts for Good Governance

The Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership has recognized Senator Aquino, Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo, and Mayor Belmonte as Champions of Good Governance after their joint attendance at an event in Malacañang. Mayor Belmonte currently chairs the Kaya Natin! group. Both Mayor Robredo and Senator Aquino have met twice with President Bongbong Marcos Jr. to sign a memorandum of agreement for classroom construction and inspect flood control operations in Naga City.

These collaborative efforts highlight a renewed focus on addressing corruption issues in the Philippines. The anti-corruption concert, in particular, is seen as a catalyst for remembering the legacy of the People Power Revolution and pushing for ongoing demands to hold all involved and corrupt officials accountable.
