The Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) is embroiled in a major hazing scandal after 49 cadets were implicated in an incident that left 22 fourth-class cadets injured. During a forum of Kapihan ng Samahang Plaridel, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla disclosed that seven of the cadets are currently in jail due to their involvement in the hazing.
Charges and Dismissals
According to Remulla, the 49 cadets were charged in connection with the hazing. Seven were charged under the Anti-Hazing Act, a non-bailable offense, while the rest were dismissed from the academy for dishonesty. 'Forty-nine were charged, seven were charged for the anti-hazing act, non-bailable. The rest of them were dismissed from the academy because of dishonesty. So, 49 were charged in total,' Remulla said.
Reforms Ordered
PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered urgent and comprehensive reforms at the PNPA following the incident. The hazing took place on Good Friday, April 3, 2026. The victims were allegedly sprayed with a mixture of drain cleaner and muriatic acid, resulting in burns and severe injuries to their bodies.
Investigation Findings
Initial investigation revealed that the hazing stemmed from a disciplinary issue after the underclassmen were blamed for an incident involving a cadet who planned to resign. The controversy led to the relief from their posts of former PNPA director Police Major General Andre Dizon and eight other officials.
