The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has called on other local government units (LGUs) to officially declare July 12 as West Philippine Sea (WPS) Victory Day. This follows the earlier initiatives of Cebu City and the municipality of Labrador in Pangasinan, which passed local ordinances to commemorate the historic 2016 arbitral victory of the Philippines.
AFP Supports Local Initiatives
According to AFP Spokesperson for WPS, Ret. Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, the military wholeheartedly supports the initiatives of these localities. He stated that such measures strengthen public awareness and acceptance of the country's legitimate legal triumph against China's extensive maritime claims.
"By institutionalizing this milestone, LGUs reaffirm the nation's legal and moral victory under the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal Award," Trinidad said. He also emphasized that these declarations serve as a tribute to Filipino soldiers and personnel who continue to guard and defend the country's maritime interests.
Background of the Arbitral Victory
The 2016 arbitral ruling, which favored the Philippines, invalidated China's expansive claims in the South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea. The victory has been a cornerstone of Philippine foreign policy and maritime security.
Local Actions
Last month, Cebu City passed a resolution for the celebration of WPS Victory Day every July 12. It also urged Congress to implement the observance nationwide. Meanwhile, the local government of Labrador in Pangasinan issued an Executive Order for the annual commemoration of the arbitral ruling. The order also mandates schools to conduct activities teaching the importance of this victory.
Ret. Admiral Trinidad noted that the AFP continues to support any effort that promotes awareness of the country's sovereign rights and territorial integrity. He called on other LGUs to follow suit and pass similar measures to honor the arbitral victory and the sacrifices of those defending the nation's waters.
