Bacolod City Government and DSSD Distribute P1.255 Million in Financial Aid to Fire Victims
The City Government of Bacolod, in collaboration with the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD), has successfully distributed financial assistance to at least 117 families from various barangays who lost their homes in a series of devastating fires that occurred in January 2026. This significant relief effort was conducted at the Bacolod City College Gymnasium in Barangay Taculing on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, marking a crucial step in supporting the affected communities during their recovery process.
Mayor Gasataya Announces Allocation Details and Support Measures
Mayor Greg Gasataya revealed that the city allocated a total of P1.255 million to aid families in their ongoing efforts to rebuild their lives and homes. The financial assistance was structured based on the extent of damage, with families whose houses were totally destroyed receiving P15,000 each, those with damaged houses getting P10,000 each, and renters and sharers receiving P5,000 each. Gasataya emphasized the city's preparedness for such emergencies, stating, "We have allocated funds for this kind of situation to support the affected families. After the incidents, I immediately ordered the DSSD to fast-track the releasing of the assistance." This proactive approach underscores the local government's commitment to swift disaster response and community welfare.
Background on the January 2026 Fires and Affected Barangays
The fires that prompted this aid distribution began on January 24, 2026, when a blaze razed several houses in Barangay 10. In the following days, additional fires destroyed at least 20 houses in Purok 3 Batad, Sitio Magsungay, Barangay Singcang-Airport, and Purok Masanag, Barangay 26. According to DSSD records, the affected families include 62 families from Barangay 10, 18 families from Barangay 26, and 11 families from Barangay Singcang-Airport. Beyond these primary areas, the city also extended assistance to fire victims from Barangay Alijis (comprising two families), Barangay Bata (five families), and Barangay Banago (19 families), ensuring comprehensive coverage across multiple communities.
Relocation Plans and Future Support for Displaced Families
In addition to immediate financial aid, Mayor Gasataya has directed the Bacolod Housing Authority to assess and identify remaining relocation areas to accommodate families affected by the fires, as well as those living in danger zones. He noted that discussions have already taken place with the affected families, with most expressing interest in availing of relocation sites. This long-term strategy aims to provide sustainable housing solutions and enhance community resilience against future disasters, reflecting a holistic approach to disaster management and urban planning in Bacolod City.
