BARMM and Tawi-Tawi Government Release P37.5 Million in Aid to Fire-Affected Households
In a significant relief effort, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the Provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi have jointly distributed approximately P37.5 million in financial assistance to 938 households displaced by a massive fire that struck Lamion village in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, on February 3. This initiative aims to provide crucial support to families as they recover from the devastating incident.
Details of the Financial Assistance Distribution
According to the Bangsamoro Information Office (BIO), each of the 938 affected households received P40,000 in aid. This amount comprises P30,000 from BARMM's Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) under its Emergency Shelter Assistance (ESA) program, and an additional P10,000 in cash aid from the Tawi-Tawi Provincial Government. The ESA is specifically designed to offer immediate housing support to families whose homes were destroyed in the fire, with all affected houses validated as fully damaged, ensuring eligibility for uniform assistance.
Distribution Event and Ongoing Support Efforts
The distribution of the financial assistance was conducted last week at the gymnasium of the Ministry of Basix, Higher, and Technical Education in Bongao. Beyond this monetary aid, the MSSD Tawi-Tawi provincial office has been providing continuous essential support to the affected families for over a month since the fire. This includes the provision of hygiene kits, clothing, food items, sleeping kits, and temporary shelter to help mitigate the immediate hardships faced by the victims.
The MSSD remains actively involved in monitoring the well-being of these families as they gradually return to their homes, with a focus on supporting their recovery and rebuilding processes. This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment of both regional and provincial authorities to assist in the long-term rehabilitation of the community impacted by the fire.
