BI: No Record of Atong Ang's Departure to Cambodia Amid Arrest Warrant
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has firmly stated that there is no official record of recent travel by Atong Ang, following widespread reports suggesting he may have fled to Cambodia. This development comes in the wake of an issued arrest warrant related to the high-profile missing sabungeros case, which has gripped national attention.
Immigration and Security Measures
According to BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval, there is no legal departure record for Ang, and there are no indications that he utilized any illegal routes to leave the country. In response to potential security concerns, the Philippine Coast Guard and local authorities are actively monitoring and managing possible illegal entry and exit points to prevent such activities.
Authorities' Stance and International Cooperation
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has reiterated that authorities still believe Ang is within the Philippines, despite receiving raw information hinting at his possible presence in Cambodia due to his involvement in online sabong operations. Remulla emphasized that if this information is verified, President Marcos Jr. could formally request Cambodia for Ang's arrest, underscoring the government's commitment to cross-border cooperation in law enforcement.
To aid in the manhunt, a P10 million reward has been offered for any information leading to Ang's whereabouts. He remains the sole accused in the case, facing charges of multiple kidnapping with homicide and serious illegal detention. In a significant move, the Philippines has also sought an Interpol red notice against him to enhance international tracking efforts.
Legal Challenges and Defense
On the legal front, Atty. Gabriel Villareal, representing Ang, has criticized the arrest warrant issued by the Laguna court, labeling it as "premature" and "legally questionable." This defense adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation, highlighting the contentious nature of the judicial proceedings surrounding this case.
