Bureau of Customs to Seize Eight Luxury Vehicles Tied to Former Lawmaker Zaldy Co
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) is poised to issue a warrant of seizure and detention targeting eight luxury vehicles connected to former Ako-Bicol party-list Representative Elizaldy "Zaldy" Co. This action follows the discovery of irregularities in the documentation of these high-end automobiles, as confirmed by BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno.
Documentation Irregularities Prompt Government Action
According to Commissioner Nepomuceno, the proposed warrant will be executed if the owner fails to present legitimate papers for the vehicles. Should this occur, the luxury cars will be forfeited to the government, underscoring the BOC's commitment to enforcing customs regulations strictly.
This development is not an isolated incident. In January, the BOC, in collaboration with the Philippine National Police (PNP), already confiscated 14 vehicles belonging to Co for violations of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. These repeated seizures highlight ongoing legal troubles for the former lawmaker.
Background of Legal and Corruption Scandals
Zaldy Co is embroiled in multiple controversies, including a flood control projects scandal where he allegedly received kickbacks. Additionally, the Sandiganbayan has issued an arrest warrant for Co related to a P289.5 million anomaly in a project in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, further complicating his legal standing.
Currently, the eight luxury cars in question are parked at the ICI compound in Taguig City. This follows a search conducted at Co's condominium, which led to the discovery and impoundment of these vehicles as part of the broader investigation into his affairs.
The BOC's move signals a continued crackdown on individuals suspected of evading customs duties and engaging in corrupt practices, with Commissioner Nepomuceno emphasizing that no one is above the law when it comes to compliance with national regulations.
