Cebu City Hall Launches Help Desk Amid Middle East Conflict Concerns
Cebu City Hall has swiftly established a dedicated help desk to provide assistance to residents affected by the ongoing war in the Middle East. This crisis has raised significant concerns over escalating global oil prices and broader economic stability, prompting local government action to mitigate impacts on the community.
Mayor Archival Highlights Economic and Social Implications
Mayor Nestor Archival explained that the help desk will serve as an information and support center for Cebu residents worried about the conflict's effects, particularly on local expenses and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). He noted that the Middle East crisis has already influenced worldwide oil prices, which are felt in Cebu and across the nation. "In the city, we have allocated P300 million for fuel and maintenance," Archival stated, underscoring the substantial portion of the budget dedicated to gasoline needs.
He emphasized that ensuring fuel supply is a current priority, especially with the approaching summer season when increased water delivery may be required if supply issues arise. Archival has directed the Department of General Services (DGS) to secure adequate fuel reserves for the next two months as a precaution against potential spikes in demand for water delivery and other city operations.
Warning on Broader Economic Impacts
Archival also warned that due to the global rise in oil prices, there is a possibility of increases in commodity prices and transportation fares, as many products rely on petroleum-based energy. This could further strain household budgets and affect daily living costs for residents.
Support Services for Families and OFWs
The help desk at City Hall will offer information and support for families in need, particularly those with relatives working in the Middle East. It will connect residents to national agencies such as the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). "They can contact City Hall. We will set up a desk and contact number; whatever their concerns, they can go there," Archival added.
This help desk began operations on Monday, March 2, providing a direct line for residents seeking assistance and reporting concerns related to the crisis. The initiative aims to foster community resilience and ensure timely aid during these challenging times.
