Cebu City Man Killed in Morning Shooting, Police Investigate Drug Link
A 31-year-old man was fatally shot by two unidentified assailants on Monday morning, February 16, 2026, in Sityo Kalumboyan, Barangay Buhisan, Cebu City. The victim has been identified as John Maglasang, alias Libat, a 31-year-old resident of the area.
Witness Account of the Incident
According to witnesses, the victim was walking with two men at 9:50 a.m. when he was suddenly shot in the back of the head using a firearm of undetermined caliber. Maglasang died instantly at the scene, while the assailants quickly fled in an unknown direction.
Police believe the victim and the shooters were acquaintances, as they were together before the crime occurred. Based on witness statements, while Maglasang was walking and conversing with one companion, he was shot from behind by the other companion.
Police Investigation and Motive
Police Major Marvin Fegarido, chief of the Labangon Police Station, revealed that authorities have identified two persons of interest to be called in for investigation to clarify the incident. Fegarido disclosed that Maglasang had long been sought by police due to an outstanding warrant of arrest for a frustrated murder case.
The victim was described as "idlas" or elusive, often evading capture attempts by authorities. Police are currently viewing illegal drugs as the primary motive for the crime, having received information from neighbors that the victim was involved in drug selling activities.
This shooting underscores ongoing concerns about violence and drug-related incidents in the community, with law enforcement intensifying efforts to address such crimes.
