Cebu Guard Charged with Double Murder After Fatal Shooting of Two Friends
A tragic incident in Cebu City has resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with a security guard now facing serious legal consequences. The second victim, Renato 'Atoy' Belanizo, 52, succumbed to his injuries on the evening of March 27, 2026, following a shooting that occurred earlier that day in Sityo San Antonio, Barangay Calamba.
Details of the Fatal Encounter
The shooting took place at approximately 10:15 AM on Friday, March 27, 2026. According to reports, the victims, Belanizo and his friend Vicente Gemuta, 42, a public utility jeepney driver, were seated on a sidewalk when they were targeted by Joel Rentuma, a 47-year-old security guard. Belanizo was the first to be shot, sustaining a head wound with the bullet exiting through his shoulder. Gemuta followed, suffering four to five bullet wounds to his abdomen and chest, which proved fatal immediately.
Mariven Belanizo, the wife of the deceased, confirmed her husband's death around 6:00 PM that same day. She expressed profound grief, stating, "I cannot forgive him (Rentuma) because he took away the pillar of our family." She added, "What he did to my husband, he should experience the same, but since I cannot act on it, I leave it to God."
Suspect's Motive and Legal Proceedings
Rentuma, employed by A Plus Towing Services under Primero Eagles Security Agency and residing in Sityo Arca, Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City, has admitted to the shooting. He claimed that he was provoked by what he perceived as bullying and mockery from the two victims, leading him to lose control. "He believed they were talking and laughing at him, and his patience ran out, thinking he was being ridiculed and harassed," sources revealed.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Franco Rodulf Oriol, information officer of the Cebu City Police Office, was notified by investigators from the Sawang Calero Police Station regarding Belanizo's death. The case is progressing, with two counts of murder set to be filed against Rentuma by March 30, 2026, once all necessary documents and evidence are compiled.
Community Impact and Aftermath
Belanizo and Gemuta were described as close friends and compadres, often seen socializing and chatting in the area. Their sudden deaths have left the community in shock, highlighting issues of violence and security in urban settings. The incident underscores the severe consequences of unchecked aggression and the importance of conflict resolution mechanisms.
As the legal process unfolds, authorities are emphasizing the need for thorough investigation to ensure justice is served. This case serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating effects of impulsive actions.
