In a decisive move to combat the rising number of road accidents involving intoxicated drivers, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), under the leadership of Police Colonel George Ylanan, has forged a strategic partnership with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Special Operations Task Group. This collaboration aims to rigorously enforce Republic Act 10586, commonly known as the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013.
Weekend Checkpoint Operation Leads to Multiple Arrests
On the evening of Saturday, March 28, 2026, a coordinated checkpoint was established by the CCPO, LTO 7, Highway Patrol Group (HPG) 7, and PCG near a popular uptown area drinking establishment in Cebu City. During this operation, numerous motorists were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in immediate license suspensions by LTO 7 authorities.
Significant Enforcement Actions Taken
Breath analyzer tests confirmed alcohol intoxication in nine individuals, who were subsequently turned over to the Cebu City Traffic Enforcement Unit (CCTEU) for processing. Their vehicles were impounded as part of the enforcement measures. Additionally, LTO 7 issued 73 Temporary Operator's Permits (TOPs) for various violations, including not only drunk driving but also operating unregistered vehicles and breaches of seatbelt and helmet regulations.
Commitment to Regular Weekend Patrols
Police Lieutenant Colonel Franco Rodulf Oriol, the spokesperson for CCPO, emphasized that this initiative will become a regular weekend activity to proactively prevent road accidents, which frequently spike during weekends. "This will now be a regular program or activity of the Cebu City Police Office in coordination with Land Transportation Office 7 and the Highway Patrol Unit. These agencies will work together to check drivers who have been drinking," stated Oriol.
Primary Objective: Preventing Fatal Accidents
The core mission of the CCPO is to suspend licenses and restrain drunk drivers before they can cause life-threatening accidents. This proactive approach underscores a broader commitment to enhancing public safety on Cebu's roads through stringent law enforcement and inter-agency cooperation.
