Cebu Police Ramp Up Security for Semana Santa Celebrations
In anticipation of thousands of Catholic devotees flocking to churches, ports, and terminals for Semana Santa, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has initiated comprehensive security preparations. Police Lieutenant Colonel Franco Rudolf Oriol, the CCPO Information Officer, announced that approximately 1,300 personnel will be deployed across the city to maintain order and safety during the holy week.
Strategic Deployment and Key Focus Areas
The security force comprises 600 uniformed police officers and 700 force multipliers from barangay tanod, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and other government agencies. Police Assistance Desks will be established at all major gathering points to provide immediate response to emergencies and public needs.
Oriol emphasized, "We're focusing our deployment on our seaports, terminals, churches, and areas of convergence throughout the entire duration of Semana Santa." Special attention will be given to religious activities such as the Buhing Kalbaryo, an annual street play held on Good Friday from V. Rama to Barangay Guadalupe.
Enhanced Vigilance at Religious Sites
Other significant locations under heightened surveillance include the Celestial Garden in Banawa, a popular religious site for Station of the Cross and Visita Iglesia observances, where large crowds are expected. The CCPO is coordinating with local authorities to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent incidents in these high-density areas.
Public Advisory for Home Security
While intensifying street patrols, the police are also urging residents traveling to provinces to take precautions against theft and burglary. Oriol advised, "We are asking those who will be traveling to the provinces, if they are leaving their homes, to make sure someone remains behind or, if no one can stay, to entrust their property to trusted neighbors for supervision." This measure aims to safeguard homes during the holiday period when many families are away.
Roving Patrols for Community Safety
To further bolster security, the CCPO will conduct roving patrols in barangays, ensuring a peaceful and orderly celebration of Semana Santa in Cebu City. These efforts underscore the police's commitment to public safety during one of the most significant religious events in the region, combining proactive measures with community cooperation to mitigate risks.
