Cebu Water District Alarmed by Stolen Meter Surge

Metropolitan Cebu Water District Sounds Alarm Over Rapid Increase in Stolen Water Meters

The Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) has expressed serious concern regarding a significant surge in the theft of water meters across its service areas. This alarming trend is particularly pronounced in the cities of Liloan and Consolacion, which have reported the highest number of incidents in recent weeks.

Alarming Statistics Reveal Widespread Issue

According to official data from MCWD, from March 1 to 24, 2026, a total of 141 incidents of stolen water meters have been recorded. Liloan City leads with 84 cases, followed closely by Consolacion City with 39 cases. Other areas have reported lower numbers, including Mandaue City with 10 incidents, Cebu City with 5, and Lapu-Lapu City with 3.

This marks a dramatic increase compared to previous months. In February 2026, only 19 cases were recorded, with more than half occurring in Liloan. In January, just 12 incidents were reported, with Cebu City having the highest count at nine.

Collaborative Efforts and Public Rewards Announced

In response to this escalating problem, MCWD has called upon the Philippine National Police (PNP) to enhance patrols and community presence. The water district is seeking assistance in identifying thieves and those involved in the illegal trade of stolen meters.

To encourage public cooperation, MCWD is offering financial rewards. A bounty of P25,000 is available for information leading to the arrest of buyers of stolen water meters, while P10,000 is offered for the capture of the thieves themselves. Individuals caught purchasing stolen meters may face charges under the Anti-Fencing Law of 1979.

Risks and Public Advisory Issued

MCWD has emphasized that these thefts result in sudden water service disruptions and expose pipes, increasing the risk of contamination. Consumers are strongly urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities through MCWD's official channels to help combat this issue and ensure safe, reliable water service for all residents.
