Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Erwin Garcia has dismissed the possibility of a 'no-election' scenario in 2028, which some have suggested could extend President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s term. Garcia made the statement in response to Senator Imee Marcos's remarks about the potential cancellation of the 2028 elections.
Constitutional Mandate
According to the Comelec chief, a 'no-election' situation is impossible because the Constitution clearly mandates that elections must be held. 'No-el 2028 will not happen. It's a mandate of the Constitution to have an election in that year... no contingency for a No-el because the election is certain to happen,' Garcia said.
Preparations Underway
Garcia added that the Comelec has already begun preparations for the presidential elections, even though they are still two years away. The agency is studying election automation, reopening voter registration, and drafting rules and guidelines for the polls.
President Marcos had earlier denied the 'no-election scenario,' while Malacañang described it as a 'diversionary tactic.'
