Complainants in Third Impeachment Case Against VP Duterte Waive Response, Criticize Defense as 'Non-Answer'
In a significant development, complainants led by Father Joel Saballa and others have submitted a manifestation of waiver in the third impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. This action was filed on Tuesday with the House Committee on Justice, where they strongly criticized Duterte's Consolidated Verified Answer Ad Cautelam, describing it as a 'non-answer' that fails to address key allegations.
Allegations of Financial Mismanagement and Unanswered Questions
The complainants, through their representatives, argued that VP Duterte did not deny crucial allegations or provide explanations for the expenditure of P125 million over eleven days. Additionally, they highlighted the lack of clarity regarding the total P612.5 million entrusted to her, raising concerns about potential misuse of funds. They also pointed to alleged confusion in Duterte's defense between 'ultimate facts' and 'evidentiary facts,' suggesting a flawed legal strategy.
Duterte's Camp Seeks Dismissal Amidst Due Process Claims
On Monday, prior to the waiver, VP Duterte's legal team requested the House Committee on Justice to dismiss the impeachment complaints. Their motion cited a purported lack of ultimate facts, violations of due process, and accusations of double standards. However, the complainants have countered this by asserting that their complaint contains substantial evidence, including allegations of misuse of confidential funds, bribery, unexplained wealth, and even claims of contracting an assassin.
The ongoing legal battle underscores deepening political tensions, with both sides preparing for further hearings. The House Committee on Justice is expected to review the waiver and dismissal requests in the coming weeks, potentially setting the stage for a contentious impeachment process. This case marks the third such attempt against VP Duterte, reflecting persistent scrutiny over her tenure and financial dealings.
