In a decisive move to shield consumers from potential exploitation, the local government of Danao City has launched a rigorous price monitoring initiative targeting essential goods. This action comes amid concerns that businesses might take advantage of rising oil prices to inflate costs unfairly.
Strict Enforcement of Consumer Laws
Mayor Ramon "Nito" Durano has directed the Price Monitoring Team and the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) to closely supervise the pricing of basic commodities. The goal is to prevent any abusive practices by retailers that could harm consumers financially.
Executive Order Mandates Price Tagging
As part of this effort, Mayor Durano issued an Executive Order (EO) that enforces strict compliance with Republic Act 7394, also known as the Consumer Act of the Philippines. Under this law, all stores are required to display clear price tags on their products. Selling items at prices higher than those marked is strictly prohibited.
Mayor Durano issued a stern warning to violators, stating that the Danao City government will issue show cause orders to businesses found in breach. Offenders must explain why they should not face charges for violating RA 7394 and RA 7581, the Price Act.
Local Government Authority in Price Regulation
The Executive Order clarifies that while price regulation primarily falls under national government jurisdiction, Danao City retains the authority to implement measures ensuring consumer protection and preventing abuse. This proactive stance empowers the city to take immediate action against unfair pricing practices.

Mayor Durano also urged Danao City residents to report any instances of businesses imposing excessive prices on basic market commodities. Citizens are encouraged to promptly notify the city office to facilitate swift intervention and maintain market fairness.
