Davao City Arrests Man for Vandalism During Anti-Litter Ops

The Davao City Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) has made a significant arrest in its ongoing efforts to maintain public order and cleanliness. On the night of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, during the city's Anti-Dugyot Operations, a 21-year-old man was caught in the act of vandalizing a structure in Matina Crossing.

Suspect Apprehended and Charged

The suspect, identified as "Mel" and a resident of Barangay Matina Crossing, was formally turned over to the Talomo Police Station. He faces charges for violating Davao City's Anti-Vandalism Ordinance, specifically Ordinance No. 0332-68, Series of 1968, which prohibits defacing, scribbling, or writing on walls, public structures, or fences exposed to public view.

Legal Consequences and Penalties

Under the Anti-Vandalism Act of 2009, violators are required to pay for the restoration of damaged property and face additional penalties. For first-time offenders, the fine is P5,000, increasing to P8,000 for a second offense and P10,000 for a third. Imprisonment ranging from 30 days to one year may also be imposed, depending on the severity of the violation.

City Officials Emphasize Respect for Public Spaces

Davao City Councilor Jessica Bonguyan, chairperson of the Committee on Public Works and Highways, has been vocal about the issue. She recently encouraged Dabawenyos to report individuals who vandalize city properties, following reports of vandalism involving the Davao City Interim Bus System bus stops and signages.

Councilor Bonguyan emphasized that vandalism is more than just property damage; it reflects a lack of respect for public spaces meant to serve everyone. She noted that vandalized signages and community facilities not only ruin the city's appearance but also undermine the efforts of those working to keep streets, transportation services, and public spaces clean and orderly.

Call to Action for Residents

"I strongly encourage everyone to respect shared spaces, protect the infrastructure built to serve our families, and speak up and report vandalism via the Davao City Reports hotline to ensure swift enforcement, promote order, and support sustainable development," Councilor Bonguyan stated.

The arrest highlights the city's commitment to enforcing its ordinances and maintaining a clean, orderly environment. The PSSO's Anti-Dugyot Operations continue to target littering and vandalism, with this case serving as a reminder of the legal and social consequences of such actions.
