Davao City Kicks Off Barangay-Based Festivities for 89th Araw ng Dabaw
The 89th Araw ng Dabaw celebration has taken a grassroots approach with the launch of the Araw ng Dabaw sa Distrito, a series of community-based events designed to bring the festivities directly to barangays. The initiative commenced on Monday, March 10, 2026, in Barangay Matina Aplaya, offering residents a day filled with fun, entertainment, and prizes.
Inaugural Event Draws Enthusiastic Crowd
Over a hundred residents gathered at the barangay gym for the inaugural event, which was attended by staff from the City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) and security personnel. Willenito Tormis Jr., Head of CTOO, emphasized in a speech that this initiative is the Davao City Government's way of celebrating the city's charter anniversary across various barangays.
"We are happy because this is the first Araw ng Davao sa Distrito, and there will be many activities happening since it will be held in six different locations," Tormis stated. He encouraged residents to participate in upcoming activities, such as the Parada Dabawenyo scheduled for March 28.
Barangay Officials Express Gratitude and Support
Nestor Cirunay, Barangay Captain of Matina Aplaya, expressed his community's delight at being selected as a venue. "We are happy that the Araw ng Distrito is being held here, especially as we celebrate the 89th Araw ng Dabaw. We are truly glad it was conducted in our barangay," he said, extending thanks to the mayor and City Tourism Office.
Cirunay noted that participants came not only from Matina Aplaya but also from nearby barangays, highlighting the event's broader appeal. He added, "I agree with this approach so that people, especially those in upland barangays, can also learn about and enjoy the celebration."

- Barangay 8-A on March 11
- Barangay Paquibato on March 16
