Davao City Unveils Comprehensive Security Strategy for 2026 Chinese New Year Festivities
The Davao City Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) has announced a detailed security plan for the city's upcoming celebration of the Chinese New Year in 2026. This initiative aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly event for all attendees, with a focus on crowd management and public cooperation.
Extensive Security Mobilization and Public Advisory
A total of 341 security personnel will be deployed to assist in maintaining peace throughout the celebration. Retired Police Lieutenant Colonel Angel B. Sumagaysay, the head of PSSO, emphasized the importance of public discipline and adherence to advisories. In a statement to Madayaw Davao over Davao City Disaster Radio on February 9, 2026, he urged residents to support the security cluster by embracing a culture of security. "Just continue helping the people in the security cluster by adapting the culture of security. Let's sustain what we are currently enjoying. If possible, let's expand this culture for our city, for the general public," Sumagaysay said.
Road Closures and Event Logistics
To accommodate event preparations and activities, partial and full road closures will be implemented along Bucana bridge from Tulip to Roxas Rotonda from February 14 to 17, 2026. Specifically, on February 16, a full road closure will be enforced from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., although roads will remain regulated and passable in the morning. "By 2 p.m., we will have a full road closure until 9 p.m. So that means no vehicles will be allowed to pass through the event, going in and out. But in the morning, it is still regulated and can still be used," Sumagaysay explained.
Firecracker Ban and Celebration Details
In alignment with City Ordinance 060-02, also known as the Firecracker Ban, no fireworks display will be staged during the celebration. The Chinese New Year event will be held at the Davao River Bucana Bridge, with the official lighting ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m. on February 16, 2026. The PSSO has called on Dabawenyos to cooperate fully with security personnel and traffic enforcers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable celebration for everyone involved.
