Davao City Ramps Up Security for Holy Week with Over 1,000 Personnel

In preparation for the anticipated surge of worshippers during the Lenten season, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) is intensifying security protocols to guarantee a safe and orderly Holy Week observance. This annual tradition has maintained a peaceful record for several consecutive years, and authorities are determined to uphold this standard.

Comprehensive Security Deployment Announced

DCPO spokesperson Hazel Caballero revealed on Monday, March 23, 2026, that more than 1,000 law enforcement officers and security auxiliaries will be stationed throughout Davao City. The focus will be on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026, which initiates Holy Week for Roman Catholics.

According to Caballero, a total of 1,084 personnel will be activated, comprising 608 police officers from the DCPO and 476 members of the Public Safety and Security Auxiliary. These forces will be strategically positioned in and around 46 churches across the city to manage crowds, assist parishioners, and ensure public safety during religious gatherings.

Holy Week Significance and Schedule in Davao

Holy Week in the Philippines stands as one of the most significant religious observances, attracting large crowds to churches for masses, processions, and traditional rites. In Davao City, the schedule typically commences with Palm Sunday masses, followed by Maundy Thursday on April 2, 2026, which commemorates the Last Supper, and Good Friday on April 3, 2026, marked by solemn processions and the veneration of the cross.

Black Saturday on April 4, 2026, serves as a day of quiet reflection, culminating in Easter Sunday on April 5, 2026, celebrated with dawn "Sugat" rites symbolizing the meeting of the risen Christ and His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Building on a Legacy of Peaceful Observances

Authorities have noted that Holy Week observances in Davao City have remained generally peaceful for several consecutive years. For instance, in 2025, the DCPO reported zero untoward incidents during Easter Sunday celebrations, locally known as "Sugat," across more than 30 churches.

This consistent record of tranquility is attributed to heightened police visibility, robust community cooperation, and disciplined observance by the faithful. The DCPO aims to replicate this success through enhanced security measures this year.

Enhanced Security Measures and Public Cooperation

Police presence during Holy Week will include foot patrols, mobile units, and assistance desks to ensure rapid response to emergencies. The DCPO is actively encouraging the public to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and cooperate with authorities to sustain the city's peaceful track record.

With thousands of individuals expected to participate in religious activities, officials express confidence that early preparations and strong community engagement will once again ensure a solemn and secure Holy Week in Davao City. The collaborative effort between law enforcement, church leaders, and residents is pivotal in maintaining the serene atmosphere that has characterized these observances in recent years.
