Davao City's 89th Araw ng Dabaw Festival Wraps Up Peacefully with Strong Community Participation
The 89th Araw ng Dabaw celebration in Davao City concluded on a peaceful note, with authorities confirming an incident-free festival that highlighted the city's commitment to public safety and cultural pride. The month-long festivities, which ran from March 1 to March 28, 2026, saw thousands of residents, visitors, and tourists participating in various events across the city.
Security and Coordination Efforts Praised
The Davao City Police Office (DCPO), under the leadership of outgoing acting city director Police Colonel Mannan Caracas Muarip, reported no major security concerns throughout the celebration. Muarip attributed the smooth conduct of events to early planning and close inter-agency coordination involving multiple organizations.
Approximately 8,500 personnel from Task Force Davao, the Public Safety and Security Office, the Bureau of Fire Protection, emergency responders, and other partners were deployed to manage crowds, enforce security measures, and ensure rapid response during major activities.
"The peaceful and orderly conduct of the 89th Araw ng Dabaw reflects the strong culture of discipline, vigilance, and unity among Dabawenyos," Muarip stated. He emphasized that the success was a shared achievement involving citizens, partner agencies, and visitors, with additional support from barangay officials, event organizers, volunteers, and media representatives.
Major Festival Highlights and Events
The festival kicked off on March 1 with the Pasiugdang Pagsaulog ceremony at City Hall and featured nightly projection mapping shows as part of Davao City's centennial celebration. New additions to this year's lineup included Kanta ug Sayaw Dabawenyo and the inter-school short film festival Salida Dabawenyo, which showcased local creativity and talent.
Key sporting and cultural events drew significant attention, including the Ironman 70.3 Davao, Ironkids Aquathlon, and the Mutya ng Dabaw coronation. Musical performances such as Kundiman at Harana sa Araw ng Dabaw added to the festive atmosphere, reinforcing the theme of unity and progress.
Record Participation in Parada Dabawenyo and Solidarity Walk
On Saturday, March 28, the Parada Dabawenyo attracted massive crowds despite intense heat, with more than 400 contingents and 50 marching bands participating. The parade included differently-abled participants marching alongside other groups, contributing to an estimated total of 35,000 participants in the event.
Earlier that day, around 16,000 people joined a solidarity walk for former president Rodrigo Duterte, which authorities confirmed remained peaceful. These large gatherings demonstrated the community's enthusiasm and engagement with the festival's activities.
Future Implications and City's Reputation
With its successful execution, the 89th Araw ng Dabaw reinforced Davao City's standing as one of the Philippines' safest urban centers. Authorities have pledged to sustain this level of peace and security in future events, building on the strong coordination and public cooperation observed during this year's celebration.
The festival not only served as a celebration of culture and community but also highlighted the effective collaboration between security forces, local government, and residents in maintaining order during large-scale public gatherings.
