De Lima Accuses Duterte Camp of Orchestrating Ex-Soldiers' Allegations
Mamamayang Liberal Party-list Representative Leila De Lima has publicly endorsed the statement made by former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, suggesting that the Duterte family may be behind the emergence of 18 former soldiers making corruption allegations. In an interview with Bombo Radyo PH, De Lima asserted that it is plausible the Duterte camp pushed these accusations to gain political advantage.
Political Motives and Timing
De Lima emphasized that the release of a 'joint-affidavit' by the ex-soldiers appears strategically timed to divert public attention from critical issues involving the Duterte camp. She noted that this coincides with the impeachment hearings of Vice President Sara Duterte and the ongoing case against former President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
According to De Lima, the Duterte family stands to benefit from these revelations, as they could shift focus away from their legal and political challenges. She reiterated her agreement with Trillanes, firmly stating that the Dutertes are responsible for the public appearance of the 18 ex-soldiers.
Call for Accountability
In response to these developments, De Lima stressed the need for accountability among those spreading defamatory claims against her, including allegations involving a 'paper bag'. She recounted past experiences where she faced similar tactics but vowed not to tolerate such actions anymore.
De Lima's remarks highlight ongoing political tensions in the Philippines, with accusations of manipulation and distraction tactics amid high-profile legal proceedings. The situation underscores the complex interplay between national politics and international scrutiny.
