Digital Pinoys Advocates for 'Digital People Power' to Combat Fake News on EDSA Anniversary

As the nation commemorates the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, the advocacy group Digital Pinoys has issued a compelling call to action. They are urging the public to embrace a "digital people power" movement aimed at countering the proliferation of fake news and misinformation. This initiative comes at a critical juncture, coinciding with the advancing presentation of charges against former President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Rising Concerns Over Disinformation During Political Events

In an exclusive interview with Star FM Cebu, Ronald Gustilo, the national campaigner of Digital Pinoys, highlighted a troubling trend. He emphasized that high-interest political events, such as the EDSA anniversary and the ICC proceedings, often serve as catalysts for an increase in false information and deceptive narratives. Gustilo stressed that the legacy of the EDSA People Power Revolution serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of truth and active citizen participation in safeguarding democratic values.

"As we honor EDSA, let us remember that democracy is defended not only in the streets but also in our timelines, group chats, and comment sections. Truth must trend. Facts must prevail. This is our generation’s People Power," Gustilo stated.

The New Battlefield: Cyberspace and Digital Vigilance

Gustilo further elaborated that cyberspace has become the new frontline where disinformation spreads rapidly, aiming to confuse and divide the public. He underscored the urgent need for "digital vigilance," which involves verifying information before sharing it and reporting accounts that disseminate false news.

"People Power today means responsible digital citizenship. Every Filipino with a smartphone has the ability—and the responsibility—to stop the spread of lies. Fact-check before you share. Do not amplify content designed to deceive," he added.

Call to Action for Social Media Platforms

Digital Pinoys is also calling on social media platforms to intensify their efforts against coordinated disinformation networks. The group insists that modern People Power relies heavily on the responsible use of social media and continuous monitoring of organized misinformation campaigns. This proactive approach is seen as essential in maintaining the integrity of public discourse and protecting democratic processes in the digital age.
