Duterte Supporters Plan Protest During Edsa Anniversary Amid ICC Hearing
NETHERLANDS. Former President Rodrigo Duterte's supporters are set to stage a protest during the 40th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution on February 25, 2026, as confirmed by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Monday, February 23, 2026. This demonstration coincides with a critical confirmation of charges hearing against Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC), adding a layer of tension to the historic commemoration.
Police Announce Details of Planned Motorcade and Rallies
NCRPO spokesperson Police Major Hazel Asilo revealed in a press conference that pro-Duterte groups will conduct a motorcade across the metro. "Motorcade lamang so hindi naman natin kailangan pagtuunan gaano ng pansin since hindi sila mag-stay sa isang lugar," Asilo stated, indicating that the event is mobile and not expected to cause major disruptions. However, she noted that around 20,000 people are anticipated to join a prayer vigil and indignation rallies organized by groups such as the Trillion Peso March Movement, Tindig Pilipinas, and Siklab at White Plains Avenue and Temple Drive in Quezon City.
Massive Police Deployment for Peaceful Commemoration
In response, the NCRPO has mobilized over 8,000 police personnel specifically for the anniversary events in the capital region. On a national scale, the Philippine National Police (PNP) will field more than 13,400 personnel across the country to ensure a peaceful and orderly commemoration. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that this extensive deployment is preventive and grounded in professionalism. "Ang layunin natin dito ay ang panatilihing mapayapa, maayos, at ligtas ang paggunita sa isang mahalagang bahagi ng ating kasaysayan. We respect the people’s right to assemble. Kasabay nito, tungkulin naming tiyakin na walang masasaktan at walang manggugulo," Nartatez explained, underscoring the dual focus on safety and respect for assembly rights.
Police Assure Non-Partisan and Disciplined Presence
Nartatez further assured that police presence will remain disciplined and non-partisan throughout the events. "Our police officers are under clear instructions: maximum tolerance, strict discipline, and full respect for human rights. Hindi ito pagpapakita ng puwersa—ito ay pagpapakita ng kahandaan," he stated, clarifying that the deployment is about preparedness rather than intimidation. He also called on participants to cooperate with authorities by observing safety protocols. "Sa ating mga kababayan na dadalo, makiisa po tayo sa pagpapanatili ng kaayusan. Iwasan ang pagdadala ng anumang maaaring magdulot ng panganib. If you see something suspicious, report it immediately. Seguridad ng lahat ang nakasalalay dito," Nartatez urged, highlighting the collective responsibility for security during this significant national occasion.
