Progressive Groups Rally Against Corruption and Fascism on EDSA 40th Anniversary

Several progressive organizations, including Anakbayan Southern Mindanao Region (SMR), Kabataan Partylist-SMR, and the Stop Corruption Alliance, strongly condemned alleged widespread corruption and rising fascism in the Philippines during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution. The event took place on February 25, 2026, at Freedom Park along Roxas Avenue in Davao City.

Peaceful Protest with Powerful Messages

Approximately 100 individuals, as reported by the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), gathered at the park, carrying placards with bold slogans such as "Tanan Korap, Silutan Na" (All Corrupt, Punish Now), "Marcos-Duterte Palagputon" (Oust Marcos-Duterte), and "Ikulong Lahat ng mga Korap" (Imprison All Corrupt Officials). The commemoration featured speeches, cultural performances, and tributes honoring the legacy of the People Power movement.

Calls for Accountability and Good Governance

Rauf Sissay, regional director of Bayan Muna Partylist, emphasized the importance of remembering the EDSA Revolution and continuing the fight against corruption and fascism. He stated, "We demand accountability from all officials allegedly involved in corruption, from the top down, including President Marcos Jr., Vice President Sara Duterte, congressmen, senators, and others. They should be charged and imprisoned."

Fauzhea Guiani, chairperson of Anakbayan-SMR, highlighted ongoing struggles under the current administration, noting that while Marcos Sr. was ousted, suffering persists. She claimed, "Instead of addressing the crisis caused by corruption, the government has responded with fascist measures. Under Marcos Jr.'s three-year leadership, there have been 134 extrajudicial killings, 822 arbitrary arrests, and 14 enforced disappearances." Guiani argued these figures indicate worsening human rights violations and unresolved economic issues.

Uniting for Change and Historical Integrity

Elmer Jon Mupas, convenor of the Stop Corruption Alliance, advocated for good governance and the imprisonment of corrupt officials, stating, "The Filipino people must unite to shake the government and drive out corrupt officials from all levels." Additionally, Sissay criticized President Marcos Jr.'s declaration of the EDSA commemoration as a special working holiday, calling it a form of historical distortion. He remarked, "Not declaring a holiday for this anniversary is like a slap in the face to those who fought in the past, as the administration tries to make people forget the revolution's significance."
