Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Orders Study on Four-Day Work Week for City Hall

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan has mandated a comprehensive study to explore the potential implementation of a four-day work week at Lapu-Lapu City Hall. This initiative follows a directive from the Office of the President, which requires government agencies to adopt stricter energy conservation measures across the nation.

Mayor's Directive and Meeting with Officials

The move was prompted by Mayor Chan's issuance of Memorandum Circular 114 on March 6, 2026, which actively encourages government offices to reduce their energy consumption. To assess the feasibility of this compressed work schedule, Mayor Chan convened a meeting with key city officials, including City Administrator Danilo Almendras and Human Resource Management and Development Office head Mario Dennis Calvo.

Balancing Energy Savings with Public Service

While expressing openness to the proposal, Mayor Chan emphasized the critical need for a careful and thorough review. The primary concern is to ensure that public services will not be disrupted, particularly access to basic government functions that residents rely on daily. Concerned offices have been given a strict two-week deadline to study the possible impact and feasibility of this new work arrangement.

Ensuring Continuity of Essential Services

Mayor Chan provided assurances that even if the four-day work week proposal moves forward, frontline offices will remain fully operational. This includes services related to health, public safety, and disaster response, which are deemed essential for community well-being. The study aims to balance energy conservation goals with the uninterrupted delivery of these vital public services.
