Lapu-Lapu City Boosts Fire Safety with Extinguisher Distribution to Urban Poor
In a significant move to strengthen fire prevention and emergency readiness, the Lapu-Lapu City Government has distributed a total of 100 fire extinguishers to 25 urban poor communities. This initiative aims to empower residents with immediate response tools during fire incidents within their localities.
Official Handover Ceremony Marks Fire Prevention Month
Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King-Chan formally handed over the firefighting equipment during the regular flag-raising ceremony at City Hall on Monday, March 9, 2026. The event coincided with the celebration of Fire Prevention Month, highlighting the city's commitment to community safety.
Under this program, each urban poor community received four fire extinguishers. This allocation is designed to assist residents in providing urgent responses to fires in their areas, reducing reliance on external emergency services during critical initial moments.
Mayor Emphasizes Proactive Community Role in Fire Safety
Mayor Chan emphasized that fire prevention should not solely depend on firefighters or the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). She stressed that safety truly begins within homes and communities, urging residents to take an active role in safeguarding their environments.
This distribution effort underscores Lapu-Lapu City's proactive approach to disaster risk reduction. By equipping vulnerable urban poor areas with essential firefighting tools, the government aims to foster a culture of preparedness and self-reliance. The initiative aligns with broader goals of enhancing public safety and reducing fire-related risks in densely populated communities.
As Fire Prevention Month continues, local authorities encourage residents to familiarize themselves with the use of fire extinguishers and participate in upcoming safety training sessions. This step is part of a larger strategy to build resilient communities capable of handling emergencies effectively.
