Mindanao Lawmakers Urge Comprehensive Investigation into MV Trisha Kerstin 3 Sinking
Three lawmakers from Mindanao have strongly condemned the recent sinking of the vessel MV Trisha Kerstin 3 in the waters of Basilan. In response to this tragic incident, they are calling for a thorough and impartial investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the maritime disaster.
Congressional Calls for Accountability and Safety Review
During their speeches in Congress, Basilan Representative Yusop Alano highlighted a critical point: this is not the first time that Aleson Shipping Lines has been involved in such a tragedy. According to Representative Alano, the company has experienced three separate incidents within just the past decade. These include:
- The sinking of MV Danica Joy 2 in 2016.
- The fire aboard Lady Mary 3 in 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 31 individuals.
- The latest disaster, the sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3, which claimed the lives of 18 people.
This pattern of incidents raises serious concerns about the company's safety protocols and operational standards.
Ownership and Responsibility Under Scrutiny
Meanwhile, Sulu Representative Samier Tan pointed to Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso as a "part owner" of Aleson Shipping Lines. Representative Tan urged Mayor Olaso to take responsibility for the events. However, in an interview with Bombo Radyo, Mayor Olaso clarified that he is not a part owner of the company; rather, his wife holds that position. He further explained that the company, being a corporation, is not considered part of their conjugal property, thus distancing himself from direct accountability.
Push for Independent Investigation into Maritime Safety
Adding to the calls for action, Kusug Tausug Party-list Representative Aiman Tan emphasized the need for a "full and independent investigation." This probe aims to determine whether any negligence occurred on the part of the Philippine Coast Guard and other relevant authorities responsible for passenger and vessel safety. The investigation seeks to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future by addressing potential lapses in oversight and enforcement.
The sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3 has sparked a broader discussion on maritime safety in the Philippines, with lawmakers pushing for stricter regulations and accountability measures to protect lives at sea.
