In a firm response to recent political developments, Malacañang has downplayed the significance of Vice President Sara Duterte's announcement regarding her intention to run for president in the 2028 elections. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro described this move as 'irrelevant,' stating that the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. remains focused on national progress and development programs.
Emphasis on Unity and Economic Priorities
Castro addressed reporters, highlighting that unity is essential for economic recovery, flood mitigation, and job creation. She argued that it is too early to discuss election campaigning, as such discussions could lead to division among Filipinos. "Why is it irrelevant? That is not what the President sees right now because there is no need for Filipinos to be divided," Castro explained. She further emphasized that leaders and public servants should avoid showing political bias and instead prioritize their work and service to the nation.
Context of Duterte's Announcement Amid Impeachment Threats
Duterte's announcement comes amid ongoing impeachment threats she faces. On February 18, 2026, during her declaration, a fourth impeachment complaint was filed in Congress. This complaint centers on allegations of sudden wealth accumulation and failure to disclose properties in her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).
Political Analysts Point to Robredo as Strong Challenger
In light of these developments, several political analysts and lawmakers have suggested that Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo could be a strong challenger in the 2028 elections. President Marcos is scheduled to meet with Robredo during his visit to Naga City on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
When asked if Robredo might be endorsed as a presidential candidate, Castro declined to comment, reiterating the administration's focus on governance over political maneuvering. "From the President's perspective... whatever the reason behind the Vice President's announcement, it doesn't matter at all right now," Castro stated. She added, "The President's focus is on working, not on campaigning or promoting oneself for the next election."
