Mandaue City to Launch Free Student Transport Program in February 2026
Mandaue Free Student Transport Program Launching Feb 2026

In a significant move to support education and ease urban mobility, Mandaue City is set to launch a pioneering free transport program specifically designed for students in the first week of February 2026. This initiative comes after the city received a generous donation of two air-conditioned vehicles from the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), marking a collaborative effort between the local government and the business community.

Program Details and Objectives

Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano emphasized that the primary goal of this free ride service is to alleviate the daily commuting burdens faced by students, particularly those who travel within the central areas of Mandaue City. By providing a reliable and cost-free transportation option, the program aims to enhance accessibility to education and reduce the financial strain on families, thereby fostering a more conducive learning environment.

Initial Implementation and Route Planning

Although the city's transport planning team initially proposed six routes for the program, the launch will commence with only one to two routes due to the limited number of vehicles available. This phased approach allows for a smoother rollout and the opportunity to assess and optimize the service based on real-time feedback and usage patterns.

The selected routes will traverse key locations in the heart of Mandaue, with the Mandaue City Hall serving as the main starting and return point. To ensure convenience and efficiency, six designated loading and unloading points will be established along these routes, strategically placed to cater to student needs and minimize travel time.

Eligibility and Schedule

While the program prioritizes students, Mayor Ouano clarified that guardians or parents accompanying the students will also be permitted to ride for free. This inclusive policy recognizes the importance of family support in the educational journey and aims to provide a holistic commuting solution.

To effectively address the daily schedules of students, the city has prepared a timetable that aligns with typical class hours. The service will operate during peak times, including early morning, midday, and in the afternoon, specifically from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, to accommodate the return trips after school. This thoughtful scheduling ensures that the transport service is available when it is most needed, enhancing its utility and impact.

This initiative reflects Mandaue City's commitment to improving public services and supporting its youth, setting a positive example for other municipalities in the Philippines. As the program launches, it is expected to not only benefit students but also contribute to reduced traffic congestion and a more sustainable urban transport system in the long run.
