Mandaue City Police Ramp Up Security Measures for Holy Week and Summer Vacation Period
Heightened police visibility is now actively enforced across Mandaue City as authorities brace for a significant influx of people during the concurrent observances of Holy Week and the summer vacation season. Officials are emphasizing robust public safety protocols to manage the anticipated large crowds that will gather at both religious and recreational sites throughout the city.
Strategic Deployment of Police Personnel
Police Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Villaro-Kantuna of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) confirmed that the deployment of officers has already commenced in advance of Semana Santa. "Yes, we have already started deploying our police officers, especially now that Holy Week has begun, as well as the summer vacation period for the Philippine National Police," Villaro-Kantuna stated. She highlighted that at least ten identified churches in Mandaue City have been equipped with police assistance desks to safeguard worshippers expected to flock to these religious locations.
Expanded Coverage Beyond Churches
The police presence, however, will not be confined solely to places of worship. "It's not only in churches but also in other recreational places," Villaro-Kantuna added, noting that authorities are preparing for a surge of visitors in malls, parks, and swimming areas as classes are suspended and families utilize the holiday break. This dual observance presents a unique challenge for law enforcement, with crowds dispersing across diverse destinations.
"After Holy Week, people will continue going out since it's already vacation, there are no classes. Many will go to malls, pools, parks, and other places where crowds are expected," she explained. To address this, the MCPO has been placed under full alert status, mobilizing all available personnel to maximize police visibility and deter potential criminal activities.
Full Alert Status and Personnel Mobilization
Approximately 800 police personnel are currently being utilized, including administrative staff reassigned to assist in field operations. These individuals will augment regular officers, particularly during peak hours when foot traffic is highest. Deployment schedules have been strategically set during early morning and late afternoon periods—specifically from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—when attendance at church services or visits to public spaces are most likely.
Villaro-Kantuna clarified that while some officers remain on approved or sick leave, the majority of the force has been activated to ensure comprehensive coverage across Mandaue City. Police outposts will also remain operational to provide immediate assistance and maintain a visible security presence, reinforcing efforts to stay ahead of potential threats.
