Melvin Matibag Officially Sworn In as New NBI Director in Malacañang Ceremony
In a formal ceremony held at Malacañan Palace in Manila on Friday, February 20, 2026, lawyer Melvin Matibag took the oath of office as the new director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). The swearing-in was administered by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, marking a significant transition in the leadership of the prominent law enforcement agency.
Appointment Announced by the Palace
Matibag's designation was publicly announced by the Palace on Thursday, just one day prior to the oath-taking event. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized that Matibag's trustworthiness and competence were pivotal factors in his selection for this critical role. This appointment follows Matibag's previous service in the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte, highlighting his extensive experience in government affairs.
Leadership Changes at the NBI
Matibag succeeds former NBI Director Jaime Santiago, who resigned from the position. In the interim period before Matibag's appointment, Angelito Magno served as the officer-in-charge of the bureau. Following the transition, Magno is set to be appointed as deputy director of the agency, ensuring continuity and support within the NBI's leadership structure.
Department of Justice Welcomes the Appointment
The Department of Justice (DOJ), which oversees the NBI as one of its subordinate agencies, expressed strong support for Matibag's new role. DOJ spokesman Polo Martinez stated during a press briefing on Friday, "We welcome Atty. Matibag's appointment and we look forward to working closely with him and the NBI." This endorsement underscores the collaborative efforts expected between the DOJ and the NBI under Matibag's direction.
Reflections from Outgoing Leadership
Angelito Magno, who temporarily led the NBI, shared his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as head of the law enforcement agency. He remarked, "Serving as Director of the National Bureau of Investigation has been both an honor and a profound responsibility," acknowledging the challenges and significance of the position. His statement reflects the dedication required in overseeing the NBI's operations and investigations.
The ceremony at Malacañang not only formalized Matibag's appointment but also set the stage for his tenure as NBI director, with expectations for enhanced law enforcement and inter-agency cooperation under his leadership.
