Major Smuggling Bust: P1.03 Million in Cigarettes Seized in Mindanao Operations

In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, law enforcement authorities have arrested three individuals and confiscated smuggled cigarettes worth an estimated P1.03 million in separate operations across the Northern Mindanao and Bangsamoro regions. The coordinated efforts, which took place on Wednesday, February 11, and Thursday, February 12, 2026, highlight ongoing vigilance against smuggling activities in these areas.

Northern Mindanao Operation Leads to Two Arrests

According to Police Colonel Leo Sua, the police director of Lanao del Norte, the first operation occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, in Campong village, Pantar municipality. Officers from the Pantar Municipal Police Station conducted a border checkpoint operation, flagging down a vehicle for routine inspection.

During the inspection, police discovered that the vehicle was transporting 390 reams of assorted cigarettes, with an estimated value of P312,000. The driver and a companion, aged 41 and 23 respectively, were arrested after they failed to produce any documentation for the tobacco products. Both individuals, along with the vehicle, are currently in the custody of the Pantar Municipal Police Station for further documentation and processing.

The confiscated smuggled cigarettes will be handed over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) office in Iligan City for proper disposition, ensuring they do not re-enter the market illegally.

Bangsamoro Region Sees Additional Seizure

In a separate operation, Police Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (Pro-Bar), reported that one suspect, aged 40, was arrested on Wednesday, February 11, in Tambak village, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte. This intelligence-driven checkpoint operation targeted a dump truck suspected of carrying illicit goods.

Operatives successfully seized approximately 17 master cases of undocumented cigarettes, valued at P727,328. The driver was taken into custody, and the dump truck, along with the confiscated cigarettes, was brought to the Datu Odin Sinsuat Municipal Police Station for proper handling and investigation.

Authorities are now preparing appropriate charges against the arrested suspect, underscoring the legal consequences of smuggling activities. These operations demonstrate the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts in combating illegal trade, which often undermines local economies and public health initiatives.

The seizures and arrests serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in border security and the importance of sustained vigilance in regions prone to smuggling. Law enforcement officials continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activities to help curb such illicit operations.
