Police authorities in Lanao del Sur successfully intercepted a significant shipment of smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P1.4 million during a hot pursuit operation over the weekend. The operation, which took place on Saturday, February 14, 2026, resulted in the recovery of 1,670 reams of assorted illicit cigarettes from an abandoned vehicle in Barangay Matling, Malabang.

According to Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), the incident began when six vehicles evaded a police checkpoint in Barangay Porug, Pualas, Lanao del Sur. Operatives immediately launched a hot pursuit, leading to the interception of one vehicle in Matling after the driver abandoned it and fled the scene.
De Guzman emphasized that investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the smuggling attempt. The recovered contraband, consisting of various brands of smuggled cigarettes, has an estimated market value of P1.4 million, highlighting the scale of the illegal operation.
Custody and Disposition of Confiscated Items
The Malabang Municipal Council police station is currently holding custody of the confiscated vehicle and the smuggled cigarettes for proper documentation and evidence gathering. Authorities have confirmed that the items will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for final disposition, in accordance with standard procedures for handling seized contraband.
