Massive P17-Billion Shabu Seizure in Occidental Mindoro Coastal Operation
In a significant anti-drug operation, authorities have confiscated a staggering haul of 43 sacks of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu, from a coastal area in Paluan, Occidental Mindoro. The recovery took place on March 10, 2026, marking a major blow to illicit drug trafficking in the region.
Foreign Markings and Suspicious Circumstances Surround the Contraband
Brigadier General Melencio Ragudo, commander of the 203rd Infantry Brigade, disclosed that the seized contraband bore distinct foreign markings, indicating possible international origins. The drugs were discovered inside a speedboat that had run aground near the shoreline of Barangay Harrison, raising immediate red flags among local residents.
According to General Ragudo, eyewitnesses reported seeing two individuals who appeared to be foreigners operating the vessel. When locals approached to offer assistance after the boat sustained damage, the men adamantly refused help, sparking suspicion. "They probably hit something hard, which punctured the speedboat. When people approached them to help, they refused the assistance," Ragudo explained. "The people became suspicious because they couldn't understand them—they didn't know how to speak Tagalog—and they kept refusing help. They were making gestures that they didn't need assistance and had only stopped to rest."
Swift Escape and Ongoing Manhunt for Suspects
The situation escalated when the concerned residents alerted a nearby patrol base. Upon realizing that uniformed personnel were approaching, the two suspects, described as Chinese nationals, immediately fled the scene, abandoning the valuable cargo. "So the people called the patrol base, and when the two saw that someone in uniform was approaching, the two Chinese men ran away," Ragudo added, highlighting the urgency of the response.
Authorities have launched an intensive manhunt to apprehend the fugitives, who are now the prime suspects in this large-scale drug smuggling attempt. The recovery operation underscores the vigilance of local communities in combating criminal activities along coastal areas.
Estimated Value and Impact of the Seizure
The confiscated illegal drugs carry an estimated street value ranging from P17 billion to P20 billion, representing one of the most substantial hauls in recent memory. This seizure not only disrupts the supply chain of narcotics but also prevents potential widespread distribution, safeguarding communities from the devastating effects of drug abuse.
General Ragudo emphasized the critical role of public cooperation in such operations, noting that the prompt reporting by residents was instrumental in the successful interception. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in maritime drug trafficking and the need for enhanced surveillance and coordination among law enforcement agencies.
