In a significant victory for anti-smuggling efforts, Philippine authorities have successfully intercepted a major shipment of illicit cigarettes valued at approximately P20.1 million in Maguindanao del Norte. The operation, which led to the arrest of a 42-year-old driver from Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, underscores the ongoing crackdown on illegal trade in the region.
Coordinated Checkpoint Operation Nets Massive Haul
According to Police Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), the seizure occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, in Pinantao village, Parang, Maguindanao del Norte. The operation was conducted in close coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC), following reliable intelligence about the transport of smuggled cigarettes from Lanao del Sur province.
During the checkpoint, lawmen confiscated 345 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated worth of P20,182,500. The contraband was being transported in a wing van truck, which was also impounded as part of the evidence.
Legal Charges and Continued Vigilance
The arrested driver faces charges for violating Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code, specifically for failure to comply with standard checkpoint procedures. General De Guzman praised the operating units for their swift and coordinated response, highlighting that intensified checkpoint operations will persist as a key strategy in combating smuggling and other illicit activities within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
"This successful operation demonstrates our commitment to eradicating smuggling networks that threaten our economy and security," De Guzman stated, emphasizing the importance of sustained efforts in the region.
Second Major Seizure in Less Than a Week
This latest confiscation marks the second significant anti-smuggling success in Maguindanao del Norte within a short timeframe. Just days earlier, on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, authorities seized P6.4 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in Sitio Marayag, Bayanga Norte village, Matanog, Maguindanao del Norte. In that incident, the cigarettes were concealed in a drum aboard a mixer truck, leading to the arrest of both the driver and his helper.
The back-to-back operations highlight the heightened vigilance and effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in the area, as they work to dismantle smuggling rings and protect local markets from illegal goods. Authorities have reiterated their call for public cooperation and continued intelligence-sharing to further strengthen these anti-smuggling campaigns.
