In a significant law enforcement operation, policemen in Maguindanao del Norte province have arrested two individuals and seized approximately P6.4 million worth of smuggled cigarettes. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, during a routine checkpoint operation in Sitio Marayag, Bayanga Norte village, Matanong, as confirmed by police authorities on Wednesday, March 18.

Details of the Arrest and Seizure

According to Police Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), the operation led to the arrest of a driver and his helper, who were operating a mixer truck. The identities of the two individuals have been withheld pending further investigation.

The arrests took place around 9:30 a.m. on March 17, after policemen flagged down the mixer truck for inspection and noticed irregularities. Upon closer examination, they discovered cigarettes concealed in a drum within the vehicle.

General De Guzman stated in his report that the driver and helper failed to present any legal transport documents for the goods. The operatives subsequently confiscated 7,550 reams of assorted smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated value of P6,460,384.

Ongoing Investigation and Police Commitment

The two arrested individuals are currently under police custody, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the smuggled cigarettes. This probe aims to uncover broader networks involved in illegal activities.

General De Guzman emphasized the police's steadfast commitment to enforcing the law and combating all forms of illegal activities in the Bangsamoro Region. He added that authorities will continue to strengthen checkpoint operations and enhance coordination with partner agencies to protect communities and uphold public order.
