Major Haul in Zamboanga City
Operatives from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Regional Field Unit-9 (CIDG-RFU-9) executed a decisive anti-smuggling operation in Sta. Barbara village, Zamboanga City, around 9:34 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11. In close coordination with the Zamboanga City Police Station 11 and the Bureau of Customs, the CIDG team seized 73 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated market value of P6,364,831.
The operation highlights the collaborative approach taken by multiple agencies to address the illegal tobacco trade. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving smuggled tobacco products in their localities.
Intelligence-Driven Seizure in Iligan City
Meanwhile, in Iligan City, policemen conducted an intelligence-driven anti-smuggling operation on Tuesday, March 10, in Rosario Heights, Tubod village. Following information about a vehicle transporting smuggled cigarettes, law enforcement launched intensified checkpoint operations. Although the vehicle initially evaded the checkpoint, it was later discovered unattended in the same area.
From the vehicle, authorities confiscated 41 master cases of smuggled cigarettes, valued at an estimated P1,640,000. This seizure brings the total haul from both operations to nearly P8 million, with Zamboanga accounting for over P6.3 million and Iligan for the remaining P1.6 million.
Ongoing Investigations and Next Steps
All confiscated smuggled cigarettes have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper documentation and safekeeping. Further investigations are currently underway to identify the owners of the contraband and to dismantle the networks involved in these smuggling activities.
