Operatives from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Regional Field Unit-9 (CIDG-RFU-9) executed a decisive strike against the smuggling network around 9:34 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, in Sta. Barbara village.
During this coordinated operation, which involved close collaboration with Zamboanga City Police Station 11 and the Bureau of Customs, authorities confiscated 73 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes. Iligan City Intelligence-Driven Seizure Adds P1.6 Million
In a separate intelligence-driven operation on Tuesday, March 10, policemen in Iligan City seized an additional P1.6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes. The operation took place in Rosario Heights, Tubod village, following intensified checkpoint activities initiated after receiving tips about a vehicle transporting contraband.
Although the vehicle initially evaded the checkpoint, it was later discovered unattended in the area. Upon inspection, lawmen found 41 master cases of smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of P1,640,000. The confiscated items have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper documentation and safekeeping, while investigations continue to identify the owners of the illicit goods.
Authorities Urge Public Vigilance Against Smuggling
The CIDG-RFU-9 has emphasized the importance of public cooperation in these efforts, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspected smuggled tobacco products in their localities. These operations underscore the ongoing challenges and successes in law enforcement's fight against smuggling, which not only undermines legal trade but also poses risks to public health and safety.
Further investigations are underway to trace the origins and distribution networks of these smuggled cigarettes, with authorities committed to pursuing all leads to dismantle such illegal operations. The combined efforts in Zamboanga and Iligan demonstrate a proactive approach to enforcing anti-smuggling laws and protecting the economy from illicit activities.
