Pampanga Police Seize P240,000 Worth of Illegal Cigarettes in Coordinated Raids
Authorities in Pampanga have successfully conducted anti-smuggling operations, resulting in the seizure of approximately P240,000 worth of illegal cigarettes. The operations were carried out recently in two key locations within the province: the municipality of Arayat and the City of San Fernando.
Confiscation Details and Arrests Made
During these targeted raids, law enforcement officers confiscated 16 boxes of "Explore" brand cigarettes, which were identified as illicit products. In connection with these activities, two individuals were arrested for violating Republic Act 9211, commonly known as the Tobacco Regulation Act. This law regulates the sale and production of tobacco products in the Philippines.
Provincial Campaign Against Illegal Tobacco Trade
Colonel Eugene Marcelo, director of the Pampanga Police Provincial Office (PPO), emphasized that these operations are a crucial part of the provincial government's ongoing campaign to combat the illegal tobacco trade. He highlighted the significant impact of counterfeit cigarettes, noting that they affect government revenue and pose serious risks to public health.
"Our objective is to disrupt the supply chain of illicit cigarettes at every level—from large-scale manufacturing to street-level sales," Marcelo stated, underscoring the comprehensive approach being taken by authorities.
Follow-Up to Previous Discoveries
Colonel Marcelo added that these recent efforts followed the discovery of an illegal cigarette manufacturing facility in Mexico town. This facility was uncovered through a joint operation involving the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police, demonstrating inter-agency cooperation in tackling tobacco-related crimes.
Continued Enforcement and Public Cooperation
Marcelo vowed that the Pampanga PPO will continue to pursue violators of tobacco laws, reinforcing their commitment to eradicating illegal activities in the region. He also urged the public to play an active role by reporting any information on illegal activities to the nearest police station or through PNP hotlines, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining law and order.
