Cebu's Misa de Gallo 2025 Starts Peacefully with 600 Police Deployed
Peaceful Start to Misa de Gallo in Cebu with Heavy Security

The cherished Filipino tradition of the Misa de Gallo, or Simbang Gabi, commenced peacefully in Cebu City in the early hours of December 16, 2025. Authorities reported a smooth and orderly start to the nine-day dawn masses, with no major crimes recorded.

Heavy Security Presence Ensures Order

From church doors to the surrounding streets, a visible and robust security force was on hand to protect churchgoers. The deployment included police officers, barangay tanod (watchmen), and traffic enforcers, all positioned to deter any criminal activity and maintain the sacredness of the event.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Jose Losbaños, the information officer of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), credited this extensive police visibility as a primary reason for the prevailing peace. He noted that the presence of officers acts as a strong deterrent against potential wrongdoers, such as thieves targeting valuable items.

Massive Early Morning Deployment

Security preparations began well before the first mass. By 3:00 AM, close to 600 police personnel, along with force multipliers and personnel from other government agencies, had already been strategically deployed across the city.

This high level of dedication is planned to continue from this first day all the way through to Christmas Eve, demonstrating the force's determination to safeguard worshippers from any malicious elements throughout the novena.

A Sacrifice of Faith and Community

The editorial reflects on the personal sacrifice involved in completing the nine-day Misa de Gallo, acknowledging the challenge of waking up at 3:00 AM, especially for those who work late. It emphasizes that the effort is not about obligation, but about accepting grace and preparing one's heart for the birth of Christ.

This tradition is seen as a sacrifice of time and a sign of devotion, a commitment that is never wasted. The hope expressed is for the peace and order witnessed on this first day to continue throughout the season, and for the faith of the people to remain strong as they complete their spiritual journey to Christmas.

Meanwhile, the start of Simbang Gabi also gave a boost to local vendors, with sales of traditional post-mass snacks like puto (rice cake) and sikwate (hot chocolate) going strong, as is customary for churchgoers seeking warmth before their regular breakfast.
