On July 4, 2026, the Clergy for Good Governance (CGG) conducted a Pilgrimage of Conscience outside the Philippine Senate, just two days before the scheduled start of the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte. The event aimed to spiritually prepare and cleanse the Senate for the upcoming proceedings.
Two-Part Ritual for Spiritual Cleansing
According to CGG Convenor Fr. Robert Reyes, the activity was divided into two parts: the “Jericho Walk” followed by an “Exorcism” led by Catholic priests to drive away evil spirits. Participants circled the Senate building, using salt, incense, holy water, and candles—traditional elements in Catholic exorcism rites.
Fr. Reyes explained the symbolism: salt represents the cleansing of the senators’ minds, mouths, and hearts; incense purifies the foul atmosphere tainted by sin and falsehood; holy water symbolizes life and purification, aiming to revive and cleanse the upper chamber from any issues.
Call for Integrity and Justice
The pilgrimage underscores the clergy’s call for a fair and transparent trial. The group urged senators to act with conscience and integrity, emphasizing that the spiritual exercise is meant to guide them toward truth and justice. The event drew participants from various religious and civic groups, all praying for the country’s leadership during this critical period.
