PNP Intensifies Operations Against Illegal Fuel Sales Amid Rising Prices
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has significantly escalated its efforts to combat exploitative business practices in the fuel sector, following a series of successful arrests and the filing of seven cases targeting individuals involved in hoarding and other illegal activities related to petroleum products. This decisive action comes in response to a recent surge in oil prices, exacerbated by escalating tensions in the Middle East, which has prompted authorities to take a firmer stance against unlawful trade.
Recent Arrest and Seizure in Albay Operation
As part of this intensified campaign, the police confirmed the arrest of a 43-year-old establishment owner through an entrapment operation conducted in Ligao City, Albay, on March 26. During the operation, authorities confiscated contraband valued at approximately P2 million from the suspect. The seized items included a fuel tanker truck, various storage containers, around 1,000 liters of gasoline, and marked money used in the operation. The arrested individual now faces charges for violating Batas Pambansa Bilang 33, a law that imposes strict penalties for the illegal trading and distribution of petroleum products.
Widespread Cases Filed Across Multiple Regions
In a press briefing, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño reported that, in addition to the Albay operation, the police have filed three formal complaints for hoarding in the Bicol Region and one in Eastern Visayas. Furthermore, separate cases of profiteering, involving excessive price markups, have been lodged against individuals in Eastern Visayas and the Davao Region. Authorities also recorded an incident of trademark infringement in Central Luzon, according to Tuaño, highlighting the diverse nature of the illegal activities being targeted.
PNP Issues Stern Warning to Public and Businesses
The PNP has issued a continued warning to the public and business operators, urging them not to exploit the ongoing oil crisis. Police officials emphasized that they will not hesitate to enforce the law against violators, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining order and preventing further market manipulation. This crackdown underscores the government's broader efforts to stabilize fuel supplies and protect consumers from unfair practices during a period of economic uncertainty.
