Philippine National Police Intensifies Security Measures for Holy Week Exodus
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has officially raised its alert status to a heightened level to ensure peace and order throughout the Holy Week period. This strategic move comes as millions of Filipinos prepare for the annual exodus to various provinces and religious destinations across the country.
Massive Deployment of Police Personnel
During a press conference held on Monday, March 30, 2026, PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño revealed that a total of 59,416 police personnel, augmentation units, and volunteers have been strategically deployed. These forces have been positioned in critical areas including places of worship, major thoroughfares, transportation hubs, commercial districts, and other convergence points where large crowds are expected.
The heightened alert status officially took effect on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026, and will remain in place throughout the Holy Week observances. This proactive measure aims to prevent criminal activities and ensure public safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
PNP Chief Emphasizes Preparation and Visibility
In a separate statement, PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. directed police commanders to implement early preparations, proper deployment strategies, and maintain high visibility in their respective areas of responsibility. "Our priority is to prevent crimes before they happen through strategic positioning and constant monitoring," Nartatez emphasized.
The PNP chief also issued a direct appeal to the traveling public: "To our motorists and the general public, we urge everyone to follow traffic regulations, avoid unnecessary risks, and always prioritize safety above all else. Our Highway Patrol Group and ground units are now positioned in key areas to ensure safe and orderly travel throughout the Holy Week period."
Spiritual Reflection and Professional Service
Nartatez highlighted the dual nature of Holy Week for police personnel, noting that "this week is not only about operations, it is also about reflection. Holy Week reminds us that service requires not only strength but patience, restraint, and compassion." This statement underscores the PNP's commitment to balancing enforcement duties with the spiritual significance of the season.
Vigilance Against Price Gouging
Beyond traditional security concerns, the PNP chief announced that police officers will maintain vigilant monitoring of basic goods prices to prevent unauthorized increases. Nartatez confirmed strong coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and local government units (LGUs) to protect consumers from potential profiteering, particularly in light of ongoing Middle East tensions affecting global markets.
"We are working closely with concerned government agencies, especially the LGUs through our chiefs of police," Nartatez stated. "We have already arrested a number of people for unauthorized price increases in the past days, and we will not hesitate to arrest more in the interest of consumer protection."
The PNP chief issued a stern warning to retailers: "We will not allow retailers to take advantage of the situation this Holy Week. I assure our kababayan that your police will remain vigilant so that those engaging in profiteering activities will be held accountable."
DTI Confirms Stable Market Conditions
These security measures coincide with confirmation from the DTI that prices of basic consumer goods remain stable, though minor adjustments may occur in the second half of April. The DTI has conducted meetings with manufacturers and retailers who have assured sufficient supply and inventory of essential goods despite ongoing oil price shocks in international markets.
The comprehensive security approach combines traditional law enforcement with economic protection measures, reflecting the PNP's expanded role in maintaining both physical safety and economic stability during this significant religious observance period.
