Student Survives Sudden Knife Attack by Neighbor in Sibonga City

A 23-year-old student narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation after being suddenly attacked by his neighbor, who is suspected to be under the influence of illegal drugs. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, March 11, 2026, in Barangay Simala, Sibonga City.

Details of the Violent Encounter

The victim, identified as Jomari Sanchez, a resident of the area, was on his way home from playing basketball around 9:50 PM. According to Police Staff Sgt. Melvin Medida of the Sibonga Police, while Sanchez was walking, he was abruptly confronted by the suspect, 43-year-old Ramon Zamora, known in the community for using illegal drugs.

Without any apparent reason, Zamora stabbed Sanchez in the back with a knife. Despite his injuries, Sanchez managed to flee and seek help from barangay tanod (village watchmen). The suspect attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended through a hot pursuit operation by the police.

Investigation and Motive

PSSgt. Medida stated that no serious motive has been identified for the crime, aside from the possibility that the suspect was mentally disturbed due to shabu use. "He might have been using drugs because his speech was erratic. Neighbors reported that he often ranted alone," Medida explained.

Zamora claimed that he was provoked by the victim, but this was refuted by residents who testified that Sanchez was well-behaved and had no enemies in the area.

Aftermath and Legal Actions

The victim is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Carcar City for a back injury. The weapon used in the attack has not been recovered, as the suspect allegedly discarded it after the crime.

At present, Zamora is detained at the Sibonga Police Station and is facing charges of frustrated murder. Authorities are continuing their investigation to gather more evidence and ensure justice is served.
