Philippine Student Union Advocates for EDSA People Power Holiday Revival

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) has expressed its solidarity with efforts to restore the customary holiday commemorating the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, observed annually on February 25. This move aims to honor the peaceful uprising that marked a pivotal moment in the nation's democratic history.

Historical Significance and Youth Awareness

Matthew Gonzaga, NUSP Panay regional coordinator, highlighted the importance of recognizing the EDSA People Power Revolution as a historic event. He emphasized that it was a non-violent movement conducted along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), which effectively ended the dictatorship under Marcos Sr. and restored democracy in the Philippines. Gonzaga stressed that educating the youth about this peaceful revolution is crucial for understanding its contributions to the country's freedom and governance.

Legislative Efforts to Clarify Holiday Status

In support of this cause, Akbayan Partylist Representative Chel Diokno has introduced House Bill No. 7911. The bill proposes that February 25, designated as EDSA People Power Day, be observed as a regular holiday every year. This legislative measure seeks to eliminate public confusion and ensure consistent commemoration of the event, reinforcing its role in Philippine history and national identity.
