Tiangco Alleges Romualdez Endorsed Impeachment Complaint Against Vice President Sara Duterte
Navotas City Representative Toby Tiangco has publicly asserted that former House Speaker and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez provided his explicit backing to the fourth impeachment complaint targeting Vice President Sara Duterte. In a recent interview, Tiangco expressed unwavering certainty regarding Romualdez's involvement, emphasizing the political dynamics at play within the Lakas party.
Political Consultation and Party Dynamics
Tiangco highlighted that the impeachment complaint was formally endorsed by Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V, a prominent member of the Lakas party. According to Tiangco, it is inconceivable that Ortega would proceed with such a significant legal and political maneuver without first consulting Romualdez, who serves as the party president. "I do not believe that something this monumental would be filed by a Lakas leader without consulting former Speaker Romualdez. In fact, I even think he is the one who wanted it to be filed," Tiangco insisted, underscoring his conviction that Romualdez played a pivotal role in orchestrating the complaint.
Accountability Concerns and Future Political Scenarios
Delving deeper into the motivations behind this alleged support, Tiangco suggested that Romualdez is acutely aware of potential accountability issues related to controversial flood control projects. Specifically, Tiangco pointed out that if Vice President Sara Duterte secures victory in the 2028 presidential elections, Romualdez might face heightened scrutiny and legal consequences. "Assuming he gets away with accountability under this administration, I am sure that if VP Sara wins as president, he will not escape accountability, right? And he knows that," Tiangco explained, framing the impeachment effort as a preemptive political strategy to undermine a potential rival.
Call for Fairness and Historical Context
In addition to his accusations, Tiangco called upon the current leadership of the House of Representatives to maintain impartiality and fairness in handling all impeachment complaints. He urged them to adhere to the same standards applied during previous complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., ensuring a consistent and just procedural approach. This appeal underscores broader concerns about political bias and the integrity of legislative processes.
Command Responsibility and Alleged Fund Insertions
Earlier statements from Tiangco further implicated Romualdez by invoking the principle of command responsibility concerning alleged fund insertions in flood control projects linked to former Ako-Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co. Tiangco argued that these controversial insertions would not have occurred if Romualdez had exercised his authority to prevent them, thereby holding him indirectly accountable for the irregularities. This adds another layer to the ongoing political and legal controversies surrounding the House leadership and its members.
The unfolding allegations highlight the intense political rivalries and strategic maneuvering within the Philippine government, as key figures navigate complex accountability issues and prepare for future electoral battles. The situation continues to evolve, with potential implications for governance, party unity, and public trust in political institutions.
