Two Suspects Apprehended in Coordinated Cebu Police Actions Against Illegal Gambling
In a crackdown on illicit activities, law enforcement authorities conducted separate operations in the municipalities of Dumanjug and Carmen, Cebu, resulting in the arrest of two individuals accused of operating as ushers for the illegal numbers game known as "swertres." The incidents occurred on Sunday, March 1, 2026, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat unauthorized gambling in the region.
First Arrest in Dumanjug Public Market
In Dumanjug, police officers apprehended a 56-year-old male, identified only by the alias "Nato," during a routine patrol at the Public Market in Barangay Poblacion. Nato, a resident of Barangay Tubod Bitoon, was reportedly soliciting bets from patrons when authorities intervened. Upon inspection, he failed to produce a valid permit from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), leading to his immediate detention. Confiscated from his possession were a bundle of betting stubs and cash amounting to P78, which were seized as evidence.
Second Operation in Carmen Leads to Female Suspect's Capture
Simultaneously, in Barangay Dawis Sur, Carmen, a 34-year-old woman, known by the alias "Nilda," was taken into custody. Nilda, hailing from Barangay Dunggoan, Danao City, was targeted in an undercover sting operation. An officer posed as a customer and placed a bet on a preferred number with her. As she accepted the wager and began recording the number, police swiftly moved in to arrest her. Authorities recovered various gambling paraphernalia and cash totaling P150 from her belongings.
Legal Charges Filed Under Republic Act 9287
Both individuals now face formal charges for violating Republic Act 9287, which pertains to illegal gambling activities in the Philippines. This law imposes strict penalties on those involved in unauthorized betting operations, emphasizing the government's commitment to upholding legal standards and preventing the proliferation of such practices in local communities.
The arrests underscore the proactive measures taken by police forces to enforce anti-gambling regulations and protect public welfare. Investigations are ongoing to determine if there are additional connections or networks supporting these illegal operations in the area.
