Zamboanga Police Arrest Two in Illegal Firearms Sale After Chase

In a significant law enforcement operation, Zamboanga City police have successfully apprehended two individuals allegedly involved in the illegal sale of firearms, following a dramatic chase that unfolded on Thursday evening, February 26. The incident highlights ongoing efforts to combat illicit arms trafficking in the region.

Details of the Arrest

According to Colonel Fidel Fortaleza Jr., director of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO), the suspects were identified through their aliases as Sambulawan, aged 23, and Abas, aged 33. Both individuals are residents of Cotabato City, indicating a cross-regional aspect to the alleged criminal activity.

The arrests occurred at approximately 10:18 p.m. along Zamora Road in Pasonanca village, Zamboanga City. This location became the focal point of the police operation after the suspects attempted to evade authorities.

Police Operation and Chase

Fortaleza explained that the Zamboanga City Police Station 7 initiated a checkpoint operation based on intelligence coordination with the ZCPO intelligence unit. The intelligence indicated that two people in a vehicle were transporting firearms, prompting immediate police action.

When the suspects approached the initial checkpoint, they disregarded the police instructions, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit continued until the suspects reached Zamora Road, where policemen manning another checkpoint successfully flagged down the vehicle and took the suspects into custody.

Seized Evidence and Investigation

During the arrest, police confiscated significant weaponry from the suspects, including:

  • Two M-14 rifles
  • One caliber 5.56-millimeter rifle

Investigation revealed that the suspects intended to conduct a transaction with a buyer in an east coast village of Zamboanga City, underscoring the planned nature of the illegal firearms sale. The seized rifles are high-powered firearms, raising concerns about potential security threats in the area.

Legal Proceedings

The suspects remain in police custody as authorities continue their investigation. Pending further inquiries, charges are expected to be filed against them for violations related to illegal possession and sale of firearms. This case is part of broader efforts to enforce gun control laws and maintain public safety in Zamboanga City.

Colonel Fortaleza emphasized the importance of community cooperation and intelligence-led operations in tackling such crimes. The successful arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated police work in disrupting illegal activities that threaten local security.
